ORURO’S CARNIVAL
LA PAZ / ORURO / LA PAZ – POOL
Departure at 6:00 a.m. by tourist bus to the city of Oruro, a 4-hour journey from La Paz.
Upon arrival, settle into seats at the central square to witness the folkloric entrance of the Carnival.
The Carnival of Oruro is one of the largest folkloric events in Bolivia, and even in all of South America. Known worldwide, especially since 2008 when UNESCO inscribed it on its list of Intangible Cultural Heritage.
Behind every folk festival, there is often a story or legend. In the case of the Oruro Carnival, the story goes that in 1789, a painting of the Virgin Mary miraculously appeared in the most prosperous silver mine in Oruro. Since then, the inhabitants have organized the carnival to pay homage to the Virgen del Socavon (Virgin of the Mine), also known as Virgen de la Candelaria (Virgin of Candlemas).
Today, the parades and other activities surrounding the carnival take place around the Sanctuaria del Socavon or Church of the Mine.
Take a break from the festivities to enjoy a traditional Bolivian lunch Every year, during Carnival, Oruro transforms into a vibrant city. It experiences a significant surge in population during this time, as more than 450,000 spectators from all corners of Bolivia, South America, and the world flock to the city, supplementing its usual population of around 270,000 residents. In addition to these spectators, there are over 60,000 dancers and nearly 6,000 musicians participating in the festivities
The Oruro Carnival lasts for four days, but the most important day is Saturday, the actual Carnival day. It’s a grand celebration reflecting Bolivian syncretism, a blend of Andean beliefs and religious beliefs. The dances and songs performed during the parades often depict scenes from the time when Jesuit missionaries conducted evangelization work in the region.
The main dances include: The Incas, originating from Lake Titicaca; the “Diablada,” representing the struggle of good against evil; and the “Morenada” and “Caporales,” depicting the slavery imposed by the Spanish colony in the 15th century.
Box lunch included
Towards the end of the day, return by tourist bus to La Paz.

Mon voyage en Bolivie avec Krasivi Tours a été transformateur. L’équipe chaleureuse a organisé chaque détail.
